Mycotoxins – A new topic

There are a lot of interesting correlations to mycosis and headshaking that I would like to share.

1) Mycotoxins can cause neurological manifestations such as irritability, incoordination, headshaking, over heating that produces increased respiratory rates, over sensitivity to stimuli that normally would not bother other horses, respiratory distress and exercise intolerance.

2) Sheep have now been shown to be able to be genetically produced to be resistant to mycotoxins. Therefore there could be a genetic component related to varying levels of resistance. Some horses are affected by mycotoxins while others are not.
Some horses are affected by headshaking while others are not.

3) Molds are a definite potential for problems as they can be present in grasses, hay and feed and certain barn conditions. They can cause increases in allergies which are associated with headshaking.

4) There are documented studies involving mycotoxins in rye grass (staggers) and others conditions that have been shown to cause neurological disorders. In horses, many researchers state that there is not enough information yet to conclude all the possible effects. Most of the effects of mycotoxins depend on the level and duration of exposure and none of this has been well documented at this time.

5) Many feed companies and agricultural experts are now recommending mycotoxin binders for improved neurological and overall health benefits for the horse.
